| Biography | Garfunkel was a member of many COBOL and programming languages groups, and an observer of the Screen Management Task Group (SMTG), now called Forms Interface Management Systems (FIMS) Committee. | |||||
| Scope & Content | This collection documents the development of COBOL and other programming languages from 1979 through 1989. The COBOL language went through a controversial period between 1980 and 1985 leading to the release of COBOL 85, and this period is well documented particularly through thousands of letters from the public review period. The collection is divided into four series: American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Records, 1980-1989, contains documents of the American COBOL Committee (X3J4), including a copy of the draft proposal of the revised X3.23 COBOL, 1982, and public review letters, 1983; the Standards Planning and Requirements Committee (SPARC); and the SPARC Programming Languages Study Group (PLSG). CODASYL Records, 1977-1989, contains correspondence, the 1981 Journal of Development, minutes, and proposals presented to the COBOL committee from 1977-1986, and records of the Screen Management Task Group (SMTG). International Standards Organization (ISO) Records, 1983-1989, has records from the International COBOL Committee (TC97 SC22 WG4) and the International Committee for the Preparation of Guidelines for Programming Languages (TC97 SC22 WG10), as well as APL standards. Personal Meeting Notes, 1979-1989, contains notes taken by Garfunkel at various meetings, many of them in calligraphic style. Related collections are the CODASYL Collection (CBI 11) and Honeywell Inc. X3.2 Standards Subcommittee (CBI 67). |
